Advertising has become a very specialized activity in modern times. In the business world of today, supply is usually greater than demand. There is a great competition between different manufacturers of the same kind of products, to persuade the customers to buy their own particular brand. They always have to remind the consumer of the name and the qualities of their product. They do this through advertising. The manufacturer advertises in the newspapers, and on posters. He sometimes pays for songs about his product in commercial radio programmes,
He employees attractive sales-girls to distribute samples of it. He organizes competitions, with prizes for the winners. He often advertises on the screens of Tocal cables cinemas. Most important of all, in countries that have television he has advertisements put into programmes that will accept them. Manufacturers often spend large sums of money on advertisements. We buy a particular product because we think that it is the best. We usually think so because of the advertisements that say so. Some people never pause to ask themselves if the advertisements are telling the truth.
(a) Why is advertisement important for manufacturers?
(b) How many kinds of advertisements are mentioned in the passage? What are they?
(c) Why do manufacturers spend so much money advertising?
(d) List your ideas for selling goods to the customers of your own country.

6. (a) Summarize the following text: (Marks 10)
Freedom to learn, to think, to speak, and to publish are among the basic elements of a democratic way of life. In the seventeenth century, those freedoms were restricted throughout most of Europe. Many of the colonial leaders brought negative thoughts about these freedoms along with them to the New World. From the earliest days they had misgivings about the growing spirit of independence among the settlers. These leaders believed that it was dangerous to educate men and women or even to allow them to Tread freely. In fact, one such leader. William Berkeley. Governor of Virginia went so far as to boast that while he was governor, there were neither free schools nor printing presses in his colony. On the other hand, many colonists held an opposing view. They believed that people should be free to Leamington, to think and to express their opinions. They also believed that printers should be free to print and distribute their own thoughts and the thoughts of others.
